AQUAIZOL Shingles: Laying technology

Yesterday the roofs of most modern houses glittered on the sun by corrugated sheets of metal shingles, leaving no chance to compete for other materials with expensive and fashionable roofing. Today the elegant pitches with smoothly transition from one to the other planes are increasingly seen. Original, but not defiant, they give a unique and refined style to each house. Shingles are one of the most popular roofing materials in the world.

Shingles selection

It is difficult to overestimate the functional advantages of shingles roofing. Above all this is durability, simplicity of maintenance, low noise while raining, wind load resistance.

Shingles form continuous mat, which is guarantee of waterproofing. The costs for improvement of shingles roofing are relatively small and easily predictable. Low proportion of the material allows the use of lightweight timbered constructions.

Shingles are almost waste-free and is suitable both for simple surfaces, and for roofs containing complex architectural elements. The variety of shapes and colours for every building allows achieving the effect in a class by itself.

AQUAIZOL Shingles

Since 2003, AQUAIZOL Roofing Membranes Factory has produced two geometric shapes of shingles – “Mosaic” and “Accent”.

The shingles consist of a strong fiberglass substrate impregnated with modified bitumen. Composition of compound is specially selected for different European climatic conditions, characterized by cyclic wide range changes.

The hydrophobic basalt dressing compound not only protects tiles from the sun, but also is a wonderful decorative element. Special painting technology and dressing compound application provide invariability of roof design over the time.

The bottom surface is a self-adhesive layer that allows achieving the absolute integrity. Shingles installation procedure is simple and relatively not labour-intensive.

AQUAIZOL Roofing Membranes Factory guarantees the stability of physical and mechanical properties of shingles for 25 years. Compliance with the international standards of quality and attractive price make AQUAIZOL Shingles accessible to a wide range of developers.

It is not recommended to lay the shingles at temperatures below +5°C

It is recommended to review the video-recommendations on Aquaizol shingles installation

1. Ventilation

For effective ventilation of the roof you should have three main elements::

  • • channels for air flow (located in lower parts of the roof);
  • • channels over the insulation (for air circulation);
  • • exhaust channels (at the top of the roof).

2. Substrate for the roof

The basis for the roof has to be smooth, durable, well ventilated. Water-resistant plywood, OSB-3 board or dry grooved board can be used as the base. OSB-3 sheets are mounted in "chckerboard" pattern with a gap in the seams. A gap 3-4 mm is left between the sheets to compensate for thermal expansion. The difference in height should not exceed 2 mm. The thickness of the basis is selected depending on the distance between the rafters.

3. Feet

The roofing is usually started with the laying of the feet represented by the bituminous polymeric roll material feet map FG-1,5 or PE -1,5 with sand up and film down. It is necessary to lay the underlay on the roof eaves, on the end of the roof, in the valleys and on apexes.

4. Felt on flat planes

When the roof slope is less than 1:3, the underlay is laid over the entire surface of the roof. Underlay is laid bottom-up with the overlap of not less than 10 cm, the edges are fixed with special roofing nails every 20 cm, the seams are sealed with bitumastic “Aquaizol”.

5. Cornice tile

Over the underlay it is necessary to lay the eave metal slats with 5 cm overlap on the roof eaves. Eave flashings are nailed with roofing nails in a zigzag manner every 10 cm. The laying of cornice tile (shingles size 1.0 x 0.25 m) is made without the overlapping.

Before installation, remove the protective film and attach the roofing nails at an interval of 20 cm.

As a start strip use apex-cornice (Fig. 5a) or shingles with the cut leaves (Fig. 5b).

6. Rake Edge

Special roll coating is laid in valley. Material is attached to the base with the roofing nails and greased with the Aquaizol bitumastic.

8. Pitch layout

Make the layout of the pitch in squares 1 x 1 m. This will help to align the “pattern” while the installation.

9. Shingles laying

It is recommended to lay first row from the centre of the pitch. To speed up during the hot period it is possible to lay several shingles without removing the film and fixing it with the stapler along the top edge. Then the film should be removed, and the shingles are nailed with the roofing nails.
To avoid the color deviations lay the shingles mixed together from 4-5 packs at a time.

10. Installation of shingles

The installation should be made in diagonal or vertical stripes with a shift in a half of a leaf, given the markup.

The shingles is mounted with four roofing nails at a distance of 2 cm from the top edge of grooves with roof slope up to 45° (Fig. 10a).

With a slope greater than 45° each shingles is fixed with six nails (Fig. 10b).

Installation of shingles

11. Gap between the shingles

It is recommended to make a gap between adjacent shingles of 1.5-2.0 mm and lapping of leaves on lower shingles of 2.0-3.0 mm.

12. Joining of shingles with the valley

In valleys the shingles are cut so that the bottom of the valley an opened strip with the width of 15 cm remains. In order not to damage the mat of the valley during trimming of shingles, the shingles shall be placed under the board. Edges of shingles are necessary to be glued with roofing mastic along cutting line on the width of at least 10 cm.

13. Joining of the shingles to the vertical surface

At the junction with the wall it is necessary to nail the triangular rail. The shingles should be laid at it. From the above the stripe of the valley mat should be laid with gluing with the roofing mastic. The upper part of joining is locked by metal flashing. It is necessary to insulate chimney stack and other pipes, exposed to heat.

14. Ridge mounting

The apex-cornice tile (Fig. 14a) or individual leaves of shingles (Fig. 14b) are mounted on the apex and edges of roofing. Start the laying of the apex on the side opposite to the prevailing wind direction. Perform the laying of the edges from the bottom up, fixing the apex shingles with four nails, with an overlap of 5 cm.
